Full container shipping service

Full container shipping service

Hung A Logistics provides full-container transportation services at competitive prices, on schedule, fully meeting the needs of transporting goods to inland ports by truck.

1. What’s FCL Full Container Load shipping service?

- FCL (Full Container Load) is loading cargo in full container or not full but paying for full container freight charge, the shipper and consignee are responsible for loading and unloading the goods from the container. When the shipper has a uniform volume of goods enough to fill a container or many containers, they rent one or more containers to ship the goods.

- LCL (Less than Container Load) is a method to transport goods when the shipper does not have enough goods to load full container, but needs to combine them with a lot of shipment from other shippers. At that time, the forwarding company will combine many LCL shipments, arrange, classify and stuffing into container, then arranging for shipping from the loading port to the destination port. Such combination is called consolidation

3. Container trucking service

Along with using containers to transport goods on ships, transporting containers by container trucks on land is also extremely necessary. This combination ensures continuity and creates a service chain in the field of multimodal transport and logistics.

For export cargo, the empty container will be sent on the trailer truck from the port / yard to exporter’s warehouse to stuff the goods into container. And then laden container will be moved to drop off at loading port to ship to the destination port. There, the goods will be moved to importer warehouse by truck, completing the international transportation cycle.

For import cargo, the cycle is reverse. When the vessel arriving Vietnamese port, the container would be dropped off at Container Yard for customs clearance, and then would be trucking laden container to consignee’s warehouse by container truck.

Both of export and import directions basically use container trucking service. Excepting loading and unloading goods from container at the port, small trucks could be used to load or unload goods.

And whenever you have a need, please feel free to contact Hung A Logistics, we would advised you in detail on the required documents and steps that need to be implemented.

4. Transportation process of receiving LCL shipment and delivery FCL shipment (LCL/FCL):

The process as follows:

Shipper send LCL shipment to Carrier or Consolidator at nominated CFS warehouse and receiving HB/L or OB/L with the words "part of container" written on it.

Container Freight Station (abbreviated: CFS) is a warehouse or yard used to carry out activities of collecting, dividing, and/or separating goods from many shippers/consignees, who have transporting cargo in the same container.

- After customs inspection, Carrier or Consolidator will load cargo into the container at CFS;

- Carrier loads container onto the vessel and transport to destination;

- The carrier unloads the container from the vessel and moving it to the CY or CFS of the destination port and delivery to Consignee.

*Container Yard (Container Yard - CY): is a place to store, deliver, and transport Containers, including platforms, wharf and waiting yards.

Distinguish between the method of receiving FCL delivery LCL (FCL/LCL) and the method of receiving LCL delivery FCL (LCL/FCL):

- Both of method (FCL/LCL) and method (LCL/FCL) are combined shipping methods.

- However, sending goods using the FCL/LCL method and LCL/FCL method, the responsibilities of Shipper and Carrier are changed accordingly.

- For example, in FCL/LCL the responsibilities of Shipper and Carrier are the same as in the case of sending FCL but when receiving, the responsibilities of Consignee and Carrier are the same as sending LCL.

5. Method of sending cargo under FCL/FCL term:

According to the FCL/FCL shipping method, responsibilities for forwarder, loading, unloading and other costs are divided as follows:

5.1. Responsibility of the shipper:

Shipper’s responsibility:

  • Rent and transport empty container to customer’s warehouse or storage place for stuffing.
  • Stuffing cargo into container including stacking and dunnage in container.
  • Put the cargo mark and shipping mark.
  • Carry out customs clearance, inspection and sealing according to export regulations.
  • Transport and deliver the container to the carrier container yard (CY), and receive the bill of lading issued by the carrier.
  • Paying for the related costs to above operations. Stuffing cargo into container can also be done at the carrier's stuffing station or container yard. Shipper must transport cargo to the container yard and stuffing cargo into the container.

5.2. Responsibility of Carrier

Carrier’s responsibility:

  • Issue bill of lading to Shipper.
  • Manage, care and shipping laden container since receiving the laden container at container yard of loading port until the delivered cargo to Consignee at the destination port.
  • Loading containers from CY including loading containers onto the vessel.
  • Discharge container on the vessel to drop off at CY of destination port.
  • Delivery the container to Consignee with a valid bill of lading at CY.
  • Payment of all costs for the above operations.

5.3. Responsibility of Consignee

Consignee’s responsibility:

  • Preparing of import paperwork and proceeding of Customs clearance.
  • Submitting of valid B/L to Carrier to receive the cargo at CY.
  • Trucking laden container to the warehouse, un-stuffing cargo from container and return empty container to Carrier or container rent company.
  • Payment of all costs related to above operation.

5.4 Bill of lading for FCL/FCL:

Carriers receive the sealed laden containers directly from Shipper and Carrier will issue a bill of lading called the Bill of Lading to Shipper.

Normally, a container bill of lading is issued before the container is loaded onto the vessel, so it belongs to the receipt-for-carriage bill of lading type.

Because only receive goods for transportation, so the bank usually does not accept L/C payment method for these bills of lading types, therefore in order to get the payment, the L/C must have the stipulation "acceptance Bill of lading of receiving goods for transportation” If there is no such stipulation, then after the container has been loaded onto the vessel, the shipper must request the carrier to replace the Bill of lading of “receiving goods for transportation” to “shipped on board" Bill of lading ; or note on Bill of lading as "shipped on board".

Once getting "shipped on board" Bill of lading and full required documents as mentioned in Letter of Credit (L/C), the bank will accept the payment.

5.5 Bill of lading for LCL/LCL:

In many cases, Shipper does not have enough cargo to send in full container, so someone will organize to collect and consolidate cargoes from individual shippers. Once consolidation the cargo, consolidator would be issued a Bill of lading to individual shippers called consolidating Bill of lading. Consolidating bill of lading is issued by the consolidator to Shipper.

At the destination port, the consignee does not present Bill of lading to shipping line to pick up the goods, but presents it to the consolidator’s representative or agent at the destination port to pick up the goods. In general, the consolidated Bill of lading is still used in sales, transfer and payment transactions, but to ensure the bank accepts payment, the L/C must state a clause "consolidator's Bill of lading is also accepted”.

After collecting enough cargo for a container, the consolidator will fill the full container, proceeding final Customs clearance, seal and then deliver it to the carrier. After receiving the full container for transport, the carrier will issue a Bill of lading to consolidator for FCL. On the FCL Bill of lading, the shipper is Consolidator, and the consignee is Consolidator’s representative or agent at the destination port.

This kind of Bill of lading is only be used for the forwarding, and regulate the legal relationship between the carrier and the consignor, but does not function as a payment document by the L/C method.

Bill of lading is an important document, indispensable document in international trade and payment. To minimize risks and disputes, recognizing and making good use of different types of Bills of lading is an absolute requirement for all involved parties, especially bank officials working on international payments and import export businessman.

7. Benefits of container shipping:

There are many advantages of using Container shipping services, so this is one of the most popular transportation and delivery services for businesses nowadays.

7.1. For Customer:

The container protects the goods, minimizing loss, damage or contamination.

Using Container shipping service could help customer maximize the loading space, reducing packaging costs and tally time.

Simplify the procedures during domestic transportation and operating costs.

Container shipping services could help customer transport a large volume of goods at once, ensuring the delivery time for production and the supply chain could not disconnected.

7.2. For Carrier:

Avoid losing or missing cargo. Container shipping services are also easily managed and controlled because each shipping container is normally using by one customer.

Container shipping customers mostly have fixed and long-term needs, so they are a source of potential customers for freight companies.

8. Freight charges in shipping of container

In Container shipping services, freight charges are set into a tariff of a liner vessel. Freight charges usually including; Inland haulage, container transport cost on the main route; cost of berth and container yards at loading and discharge port; Other costs...

Freight charges depend on the following factors:

- Type and size of container (large or small, specialized or non-specialized).

- Type of goods loaded in the container, which is based on the class of goods.

- Level of container loading usage (heavy or non-heavy cargo).

- Distance and type of the transportation route.

The Advent of Container shipping service has quickly changed many aspects of domestic transportation as well as international transportation. From delivery term, loading and unloading equipment, to transportation methods, everything has changed. In accordance with this advanced transportation method, Container Shipping Companies have introduced their own tariffs to serve customers; container freight charge includes 3 types:

+ Container shipping freight is calculated by item (CBR: Commodity Box Rate). This is the gross freight for transporting a container containing a separate item. The carrier calculates the freight rate based on the average usability of the container (for example: 14 tons for 20-foot container). With this calculation, if the shipper can load more cargo, it will be more profitable. Usually big shippers like this type of freight rate while small shippers don't like it. For carriers, full container freight calculation is more simple and reduced administrative costs.

+ Container freight charges are calculated for all types of goods (FAK: Freight all kinds). According to this calculation, all cargo must pay a same freight charge for the same container shipment, despite of the value of the goods in the container. The carrier would calculated freight rate bases on the total estimated cost of the trip divided by the number of containers expected to be transported. Compared with CBR freight rate, FAK freight rate is more reasonable, since the unit of loading, unloading and taking the space on the vessel is the standard container. For carriers, applying this type of freight rate will simplify the calculations. But this type of freight rate also has shortcomings in that, shippers with higher value goods is advantage, while shippers with low value goods is disadvantage.

+ Freight rate of LCL cargo: just like liner vessel, this type of freight rate is calculated according to the weight, volume or value of the goods (depending on the carrier's choice), plus with types of LCL cargo services such as container freight station charges, stuffing and unloading fees from the container (Less than container load charges). That's why LCL container freight charges are always higher than other types of freight charges.
